Explore Costa Rica’s diversity on this smorgasbord of high-energy activities. We glide on a zipline through the Sarapiqui rainforest. We mountain bike along a network of trails that wind through fertile coffee plantations. We whitewater raft down the swirling Pacuare River, and we relax in steamy hot springs at the Arenal Volcano. On a clear day, smoldering molten can be seen dripping from the cone. This adventure has the perfect blend of activity, the outdoors and sweet relaxation.
A BikeHike Adventures representative will welcome you at the airport and take you to a comfortable hotel in San Jose. Here we will go over your trip and answer any questions you may have. The evening is free to explore San Jose.
The adventure begins with a drive to the panoramic Orosi Valley. After a safety talk and some helpful tips on mountain biking we mount up and begin our ride. The landscape of the area is distinctive with coffee plantations carpeting the valleys and misty cloud forest up in the hills. We'll start our ride on dirt roads, will some good glute burning climbs, but equally invigorating descends, offering spectacular views of this pristine region. We end with a good climb on a paved road to Turriabla, the gateway to the Pacuare River. The support vehicle is nearby for any wishing to catch a lift up to our mountaintop hotel. Overnight in the Turrialtico Hotel. (B,L)
From our mountaintop lodge we drive to the “put in” on the Pacuare River for our three-day whitewater adventure. We'll run a total of 27 kilometers of Class III-IV rapids through this magnificent river valley. Early afternoon we'll arrive at El Nido del Tigre, our comfortable riverside camp. The camp is cozy with permanent tents on platforms, flush toilets, sinks and showers. The grounds are beautifully manicured and there's a gazebo to rest in with lots of hammocks to laze in. There's time before happy hour to explore the grounds searching for the poisonous dart frog and the resident monkeys in the area. Overnight camping at El Nido del Tigre. (B,L,D)
Today is a free day at El Nido del Tigre, to relax and explore the dense jungle. There is plenty to keep you occupied from hiking through the rainforest to a cascading waterfall, traversing across the river on a cable, in a basket, or simply relaxing in a cozy hammock with a good book. The guides will prepare a Pacuare feast for dinner tonight. (B,L,D)
Today we're back in our boats, bouncing through exhilarating bubbling swells. The Pacuare River cuts through a virgin rainforest and canyon walls that drip with veils of spray. Flocks of green parrots and oro pendula are frequently heard squawking overhead, singing distinctive calls. If we're lucky, we may spot the keel billed toucan, a resident of this area. After a couple of hours of paddling, we'll stop for a side hike. Still donned in our helmets and life jackets we'll scramble over rocks and climb up through the muddy jungle to a fresh water pool that has a huge cascading waterfall. This is a great place for a refreshing swim. The thunderous spray will certainly massage any sore muscles. For the hearty, there some good cliff jumps here, with a deep pool to swim in. The bigger rapids come after lunch, and then we take out in Finca Pacuarito, where the whitewater section ends. This is a riverside campsite on 5 acres of land, with groves of banana, orange and avocado trees. There are platformed areas housing spacious tents throughout the property. Dinner tonight will be a riverside feast prepared by the guides. Mountain bikes are available for those who want some more activity to explore the nearby banana plantations and the local village. (B,L,D)
We crawl out of our tents and have a hearty breakfast before setting off in our vehicle for a drive to La Fortuna, the closest town to the Arenal Volcano. Our destination is an Ecological Tropical Park near Arenal Volcano where we'll embark on a thrilling zipline high in the rain forest canopy. The cables range in length from 700 feet/200 meters to 2500 ft./ 800 meters. Safely secured in harnesses, gloves and helmets we'll zip along cables high in the jungle canopy, crossing canyons, observing powerful waterfalls and zipping off an observation tower 60 feet/18 meters high. The Fortuna and Pino Blanco waterfalls, along with the majestic Arenal Volcano are all highlights of today's trek. Overnight in a comfortable hotel in La Fortuna. (B, L)
There are a variety of hiking trails to choose from to fully appreciate the majesty of the Arenal Volcano. Through private trails into the primary forest this is a unique experience as we are surrounded by a great variety of flora and fauna of breathtaking beauty. The exact route will depend upon the group but it will be a full day of hiking. We end the day with a soak at the Hot Springs and if the night is clear, we get the chance to see the red glow of the volcano’s molten lava. (B,D)
After a lazy morning and some time to explore the town of La Fortuna we begin our drive back to San Jose. On the way back we make a stop in the village of Sarchi, famous for Ox Cart Factories and numerous souvenir shops. The rest of the afternoon and evening is free to take in the bustling energy of of San Jose, Costa Rica's capital city. (B)
